Services
Auto Repair
The Auto Port provides automotive mechanical services.
Towing is also available from the Auto Port.
It can take some time for parts to arrive on island. Batteries, for example, need to be shipped on the barge and can take up to three months to arrive.
Base Communications
The BCO provides the land-based telecommunications for all of the commercial, military, and residential phone lines.
Ten-digit phone numbers all share the same area code and prefix: (757) 458-xxxx. Locally, those numbers can be dialed using just the last four numbers.
Some phone numbers have 5 digits (e.g., the Dive Center: 75336). Those numbers cannot be dialed outside of NSGB.
Residential lines are pre-configured and come with the house. All you have to do is connect a phone.
Cell Phones
Cellular services are provided by T-Mobile.
T-Mobile no longer has a retail presence on island. If you don't already have T-Mobile, you'll need to visit a shop stateside and sign up before traveling to GTMO.
It is highly recommended that you disable roaming services. Depending on your cell phone settings, you may be inadvertantly connected to CubaCel. As the name suggests, it's the national cellular service of Cuba and roaming fees are expensive.
Internet
The base has a high-speed Internet connection, allowing for streaming TV services, gaming, etc. Depending on the internet service level you choose, you should get up to 75 mbps downloads.
Service is provided by ViaSat goWiFi. For instructions on connecting or managing your account, visit gowifinavy.com
Our internet can appear as though it originates from the country of Cuba. Some websites will block connections or partially load a page. Installing a VPN on your computer may resolve the issue.
Post Office
It usually takes 2-3 weeks for mail to arrive from the states. The mail is routed through APO/FPO distribution centers using the Military Postal Service.
Television
Phoenix Cable provides a number of cable television channels.
Streaming services do work on base but there are times when the Internet connection appears to originate in Cuba. That can cause service issues with many providers and it's often not obvious why you cannot connect.
